A Step-by-Step Guide
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the countless hair care tips online, you’re not alone. One day it’s rice water, the next it’s clay masks or scalp scrubs with caffeine and mint. With all the noise, it’s easy to forget that your hair just needs consistency, moisture, and a little love (plus the right products, of course!).
So let’s cut through the fluff and build a solid, practical hair care routine tailored for natural hair—whether you're rocking coils, kinks, curls, or something in between.
Step 1: Know Your Hair Type and Porosity
🌸Before you grab every trending product, take a moment to learn your hair’s personality.
🌸Hair Type: Are you 4C? 3B? Somewhere in the middle? The tighter the curl pattern, the more fragile and dry the hair tends to be.
🌸Porosity: This determines how well your hair absorbs and retains moisture. Do the water droplet test (we can post a short guide on this if you'd like!).
🌸Understanding your porosity helps you choose the right ingredients, like heavier oils for low porosity or humectants for high porosity hair.
Step 2: Cleanse – But Don’t Overdo It
🌸Clean scalp = healthy hair growth. But there’s a fine line between clean and stripped.
🌸Use a sulfate-free shampoo weekly or biweekly, depending on your lifestyle.
🌸Co-wash (conditioner washing) in between shampoo days if your scalp gets dry easily.
🌸We recommend a gentle herbal shampoo or cleansing balm that doesn't leave your curls begging for moisture afterward.
Step 3: Deep Condition Like You Mean It
This is not a step to skip, especially for natural hair.
🌸Use a deep conditioner once a week.
🌸Look for ingredients like shea butter, moringa oil, honey, and aloe vera.
🌸Cover with a plastic cap and sit under heat or a warm towel for better absorption.
Your curls will thank you. Trust us.
Step 4: Moisturize and Seal
🌸This is where the magic happens. Dry hair breaks. Moisturized hair flourishes.
🌸Use the LCO or LOC method (Liquid-Cream-Oil or Liquid-Oil-Cream).
🌸Start with a water-based leave-in.
🌸 Follow up with a cream or butter, then seal with an oil like moringa, jojoba, or castor.
🌸 Test which method your hair loves most—it’s not one-size-fits-all.
Step 5: Protective Styling (But Make It Make Sense)
🌸Protective styles like twists, braids, headwrap are great, but they’re not magic spells.
🌸Don’t keep styles in for more than 4–6 weeks.
🌸Moisturize your scalp and ends regularly, even while styled.
🌸Avoid too-tight styles that stress your edges.
🌸 Let your hair rest, but also let it breathe.
Step 6: Trim When Needed (Yes, Really)
🙅🏿♀️No, trimming doesn’t make your hair grow faster. But it prevents split ends from traveling up the shaft.
💇🏾♀️Trim every 8–12 weeks, or whenever your ends start to feel rough and see-through.
💇🏾♀️You don’t need to take off a lot, just enough to keep your strands healthy.
🌱 Think of it like pruning a plant. Necessary for healthy growth.
Bonus Tips:
Sleep with satin: Pillowcases or bonnets. Cotton is not your hair’s friend.
💆🏾♀️Scalp massage: Stimulates blood flow. Bonus if you use a growth oil.
🕒 Be patient: Natural hair thrives on consistency, not miracles.
A good hair care routine isn’t about perfection, it’s about being intentional. Your natural hair will flourish with time, love, and the right regimen. And when in doubt? Keep it simple, sis.
